MEET A MEMBER

How did you hear about us and why did you become a member?

My name is Barbara Gravesande and I first heard about JustBe from a good friend of mine who invited me to a Dinner Dance in Bickley Manor, many years ago. It was an event about Men’s Prostrate Cancer, which was very interesting and gave me a good insight into this subject. I then attended a different charity event where I met the lovely Yvette McDonald, we got to talk about her vision for JustBe, we exchanged numbers/email address. At this point I was already hooked from the previous event at Bickley Manor.  I then started supporting and attending events, shortly after, I decided to become a Member.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I didn’t have a lot of hobbies or interest before, apart from reading and travelling, but since joining JustBe, I now attend most of the theatre shows -I really enjoy the musicals. I love to walk with the Saturday Walk & Talk group where we have conversations about many health issues and importance of self-care. I also enjoy reading but don’t always get the time to sit still and read, and lastly, I love to travel, and as the restrictions have now been lifted, I have started travelling again. I have also started playing netball again with the ladies in the walking group.

In my spare time, I’m currently in the process of setting up my new gift-wrapping business called Be-Wraps, so if you need that present gift-wrapped for that special occasion, please contact me for more details.

Which JustBe event has been your favourite so far?

I really loved attending the Black History Annual Dinner and Dance, but sadly these events have had to be postponed since the pandemic, hopefully they will come back on to the JustBe calendar in the future, but for now my favourite event of all was the Seniors Fashion Show back in 2019!  It was amazing to see the Seniors stepping out of their comfort zone and strutting their stuff on the catwalk. Another favourite was the Brighton Walk, this was the first time I travelled away with the sisters, we had the most fantastic time that weekend:  we walked, talked, laughed and JustBe’d. My second trip away was to Liverpool last year. What can I say, I had so much fun that weekend, especially at the Cilla Afternoon Tea, good food and good company.

Have you managed to meet and keep in touch with other members outside of JustBe Events?

I have made some new and wonderful friends through JustBe who I keep in touch with outside of this group, we dine out and socialise most weeks.

Three words to describe JustBe?

I would describe JustBe as a strong, empowering, and inspiring group, a forum full of wonderful sisters who are able to JustBe themselves while helping other vulnerable people in the community as well, and this is just what’s needed in my life right now.

Has JustBe impacted your life, if so how?

Yes, I think JustBe has impacted my life, not only do I now attend most of the events, it gets me out of the house, meeting new and exciting people, but now I also assist with the setup and arranging of most of the events as I decided to become a Volunteer. Last year I helped to arrange and organise the Seniors Day Out to Eastbourne, from arranging the coach company to make up and wrapping the gifts. I have helped out with most of the JustBe events delivered last year, including the Moments4Seniors Christmas Lunch, it was so nice to see the seniors all dressed up in their finest, ready to be entertained for the afternoon.

Who has influenced you the most in your life?

The person who has influenced me most of my life was my Mum, unfortunately, she is no longer with us, but she made me the strong, independent woman I am today. She taught me to never give up and stay true to myself.  She used to say ‘if you are going to do something, always do it the right way, no shortcuts’.
