In 1941 a 16 year old Allan Wilmot responded to an advertisement in the Jamaican Gleaner and volunteered for the British Royal Navy.  He spent 2 years on board HMS Hauken, defending British and allied vessels from attack at sea by German u-boats, before serving out the war as ground crew with the Royal Air Force in the UK. Back in Jamaica, Allan found a distinct lack of opportunity for de-mobbed servicemen, and so he returned to London in 1947. Throughout the 50s and 60s he had success in the entertainment business as a member of the popular singing quartet The Southlanders. Allan spent the rest of his working career in telecommunications with the Post Office retiring from the service in 1990.
